New in Rockford: Free Compost Drop-Off!

Whether you’re an avid at-home composter or a beginner, the new Food Scrap Drop-Off program is an easy next-step toward becoming a greener household! This free program allows Kent County residents to drop off their food scraps at the North Kent Recycling & Waste Center along 10 Mile Road (right across from Meijer).

For At-Home Composters:

If you’re looking for somewhere to bring your meat, dairy, and bones — this is it! The Food Scrap Drop-Off program accepts many hard-to-compost items that typically end up in the trash.

For Brand New Composters:

If you’ve been nervous about composting, this is a great place to start! With a very short list of restricted items, almost all food waste can get dropped off.

How to Get Started:

  1. Add food scraps to a bucket throughout the week (we recommend one with a lid!). If you don’t have a bucket, contact the Rockford Sustainability Committee at suscominfo@rockford.mi.us to receive a FREE composting bucket. The bucket has a special seal to prevent leaks and odors, yet is very easy to open when needed!

  2. Download the metroKEY app. This app will unlock the compost drop-off bin for you!

  3. Drop off your food scraps at the North Kent Recycling & Waste Center located at: 2908 10 Mile Road NE, Rockford, MI 49341. When you arrive, ensure Bluetooth is turned “on”. Open the metroKEY app, choose your location, and tap the button to unlock the container. Ta-da!
