About Us

Serving Rockford through Sustainable Action.

Our Actions

The Sustainability Committee is a volunteer-run commission of the City of Rockford to improve residential quality of life through environmental sustainability. We connect stakeholders, advise practices, and empower action to improve the sustainability of the City of Rockford.

Connect Stakeholders

Our committee is comprised of Rockford residents, business owners, parents, City officials, and Nonprofit leaders. We advance environmental and economic sustainability by facilitating collaboration and discussion between diverse stakeholders in the community.

Advise Practices

We advise and address citizens’ sustainability concerns by acting as a liaison between residents and the City of Rockford. We learn about citizens’ concerns at our regular events, meetings, and through website feedback forms

Empower Action

We empower residents, businesses, schools, and government to become more sustainable through education, service events, and hands-on implementation projects.

Our Why

Envisioning Rockford’s Future

Our Vision

A community that lives, works & plays in balance with nature.

Our Mission

Inspire and empower environmental responsibility.

Our Objectives:

Inspire and take community action across the five pillars of sustainability while enhancing quality of life through environmental, social and economic stewardship.

  • Sustainable City Government operations

  • Sustainable Waste Management

  • Sustainable Resource Solutions

  • Sustainable Transportation Alternatives

  • Sustainable Natural Ecosystems

Put simply, our objectives can be organized into three “Focus Areas” that we believe will propel Rockford forward into the sustainable future we envision: (1) Advocacy within City Operations (2) Sustainability Education and Empowerment and (3) Natural Ecosystem Restoration

Our How

Our Theory of Change

The Grassroots Collective describes a Theory of Change as “a series of ‘outcome pathways’, in which one activity leads to one small change, and then another change, and then another, ultimately leading to the achievement of the desired long-term change. The Theory of Change helps to create a step-by-step series of outcomes that will each individually move you closer towards achieving your long-term change.”

The Theory of Change outlines SusCom’s desired long-term impact: a community that engages in sustainable behaviors that drives bottom-up change. If the community engages in sustainable behaviors, we believe that Rockford will become a place where people live, work, and play in balance with nature.

To encourage sustainable behaviors in the Rockford community (which comprises citizens, businesses, schools, and government), SusCom’s short-term goals must focus on awareness, education, and empowerment. As short-term goals are achieved, we believe that our medium-term goals will become more realistic, thus bringing about true Rockford sustainability.
