Our Board & Volunteers

We are 100% volunteer-run! Our board members, subcommittee chairs, and regular volunteers local community memebers committed to improving the quality of life in our town.

Board Members: Rockford SusCom has nine board members who are responsible for strategic oversight, liaising with the City, and providing hands-on service through subcommittee volunteering. Currently, the Board meets monthly at City Hall and encourages public attendance! Please view our Calendar of Events for the latest information. Board members are City of Rockford residents.

Subcommittees: Our Subcommittee leaders and volunteers are the backbone of SusCom! It’s how we get things done! Subcommittee chairs live within the Rockford School District and oversee Subcommittee actions, volunteer relations, and coordination. Please reach out to a Subcommittee chair if you’d like to get involved!

Volunteers: We encourage friends from Rockford and neighboring townships to get involved as volunteers! Come and go as you please; no hourly commitments are required.

  • Amanda Boersma

    Chair of the Board

    Amanda is a Rockford resident but feels most "at home" in nature. You'll often find her on the patio of a local coffee shop. Inspired by the mandate of Creation Care, she not only desires restoration of the natural world, but also for human and labor rights. With a Master of Science in Sustainable Fashion, her specialty is in the intersection of E-S-G topics, with focus on the labor and environmental impact of mass-produced clothing.

  • Kerrie LeBlanc

    Vice-Chair of the Board

    Kerrie serves as the Co-Chair, a position she has held since its founding. She is passionate about environmental advocacy and works to inspire sustainability initiatives throughout the Rockford community, including Rockford Public Schools. In addition to her committee work, she is a real estate agent at Five Star and co-owner of LeBlanc Custom Homes, a business focused on green building practices and healthy home environments. Kerrie is committed to integrating sustainable principles into both her professional and community-driven projects, helping to foster a greener future for Rockford.

  • Drake McArthur

    Communications Subcommittee Chair

    Drake holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Western Michigan University and an MBA from Grand Valley State University. After relocating to Rockford in 2021, he became actively involved in the community. With a strong background in engineering and business, Drake is passionate about advancing sustainability initiatives. He enjoys spending time with his family in Rockford, where he is dedicated to fostering a more sustainable future.

  • Kathryn Breznau

    Community Education Subcommittee Chair

    Kathryn received a B.A. in Liberal Arts with a major in Psychology from Immaculata College, Immaculata, PA. She has worked as an accountant at Sears, Oryana Food Cooperative, retail and service provider small businesses, a CPA firm, as controller for non-profit QIO federal and state contractor, and a financial analyst / accountant / contracts manager for Beaumont Health Systems Research Institute, retiring in 2014 to West Michigan.

  • Christine Koppang

    Board Member

    Christine holds a Masters in Energy Engineering and a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering, both from the University of Michigan. Christine has always had a passion for the environment.  During college, she held internships at the US EPA and the Natural Resources Defense Council during which she evaluated production emissions and pollution prevention for multiple industries.  She has also worked as a Process Engineer designing a nuclear waste treatment plant in Washington state, with the project goal of preventing contamination of the Columbia River.  Christine previously represented her employer on the West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum. Christine is most concerned about curbing climate change, and is excited to work within her community to find opportunities to do this.

Subcommittees

  • Communications

    The Communications Subcommittee focuses on enhancing outreach efforts by evaluating current communication channels and identifying gaps in audience engagement. They also aim to develop strategic content and create efficient processes to maintain consistent and effective communication across all platforms.

  • Community Education

    The Education Subcommittee focuses on community outreach to educate the public about sustainability practices and the benefits of environmental stewardship. Their goal is to increase awareness and inspire actionable change by highlighting local sustainability features and resources.

  • Rockford Environmental Stewardship Team (R.E.S.T.)

    The Rockford Environmental Stewardship Team plans to work with the community to identify, manage, and reduce invasive species through coordinated removal efforts and educational outreach. Their goal is to restore native habitats and support long-term ecological resilience throughout the city.

  • Funding, Grants, and City Relations

    The Funding, Grant, and City Relations Subcommittee coordinates between the Sustainability Committee and the Rockford City Council, advocating for the integration of sustainability practices across all city departments. The subcommittee also seeks funding opportunities and applies for grants to support SusCom initiatives and citywide sustainability projects.

  • Business Relations

    The Business Relations Subcommittee is dedicated to strengthening and supporting Rockford Green Leader businesses by fostering closer partnerships between SusCom and the local business community. Its focus includes increasing membership in the Green Leader program and providing resources and collaborative opportunities to promote sustainable business growth

  • School Relations

    The School Relations Subcommittee plans to partner with local schools to create student-led green initiatives. Through these efforts, they aim to inspire environmental stewardship and build a lasting culture of sustainability within the school community.
